final logo & sketches

My final logo is the red logo on top and the other 5 images are my sketches leading up to my final logo.  I actually chose the business that I am in the process of making right now as the title for my logo.  I changed some ideas as I went along and come up with a few different ideas and decided on my final logo.

Questions-

1. I felt that creating my logo made me think about how appealing it would be to viewers.  I wanted to be creative and I feel that if I had more time, I would try to make it more solid then it already is.

2.  I actually used the name of my own business which I am creating.I wanted my logo to look unique in its design.

3. You don't want your logo to be to complex. When individuals see your logo, you want them to start making a connection with your company/business.  Somewhat simple, but unique and distinctive as well.

4. The videos were able to help us out some and give us a few pointers.  I got some good ideas from them that anyone can use for logos in general.  Logo's need to have style and be creative and there are endless possibilities for them.

color and value pictures taken digitally using my camera

1.I felt that doing these two simple art practices was a good way to get a feel for using paint and realizing how the scale is from dark to white.

2.I enjoyed using the paint the most and mixing colors.  It is more fun then using a pencil.

3. I was surprised how a few of the colors came out and that you could really differentiate them from each other.

4. I learned a few interesting techniques that we can use when doing our own work.

Blog Post- Aesthetics, Changeux, Ramachandran, and more

 1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Aesthetics is the philosophical study of beauty and art.  In the video, Picasso's Guernica is discussed.  The topic of its beauty was brought up.  Some might say it is beautiful, while others say it is a work of art.  Plato is discussed in this video as well along with many others such as Hutcheson, Kant, Stendhal, and Leo Tolstoy.  Kant said the judgement of the beautiful is not rule bound rather following Hutcheson, it is based on a feeling.  Expression theory states that art is the expression of emotion defined in ways that are particular to the theory.  The video then moves on towards more modern art such as films, musicals, photography, comics, and science fiction.  We are surrounded by art.
In the next video, two speakers, one French, one Indian, Changeux and Ramachandran, really go in depth into aesthetics and how the human brain works in relation to the art that we see.  They question and raise great points on how art effects are emotion, and why we act certain ways when dealing with art.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.

Francis Hutcheson played a pretty important role on aesthetics for his time.  His work took place in the 18th century.  Hutcheson was one of the earliest modern writers on aesthetics. He says that we are endowed with a special sense by which we perceive beauty, harmony and proportion.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

Changeux believes there is a definite genetic envelope for the evolutionary origins of art.  He is very scientific in his research.  He really goes into depth on how the human brain develops.  I was able to see how emotions, feelings, thoughts, and consciousness all together in his segment. The most interesting part I found from Changeux's piece was his slide on the brain imaging of surprise.

Ramachandran states that the place where art and science meet is the human brain.  It was nice to see how his interest in art had developed over time and that he was kind of drawn into it and then started to study and really understand it.  The most interesting part about his segment as a whole was the comical side of his presentation.  He was enjoyable to watch and wasn't boring at all.  He showed how a distorted picture Picasso had done was looked at by critics as a great work, even though it had been ugly and unattractive.  On the other hand, these critics bashed a very realistic Indian work which was beautiful in its own sense.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

A lot of the topics in the video were directly related to the text, but they were more in detail and more interesting since they were put together in a nice video format.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?

I feel that the films were educational.  It was a little hard to sit through both videos because they were both a little long with a lot of information.  Changeux was a little boring to listen to, but he had a great accent.  Ramachandran was a lot more interesting while still being informative and bringing up a lot of good information.
The videos definitely help because it is a different tool for learning.  Some individuals learn better from seeing, whiles others do the same reading.  By having both, we can use both reading and visually seeing what were learning to get the most out of it.

Account set up & Expectations

1. It was pretty easy to set up my GMail and Blogger accounts because I already had a Gmail account set up so I was able to set up blogger easily along with having my current gmail.

2. I expect to develop a better understanding for different types of art and individuals works and see different perspectives on things we learn.

3. It is nice to have an online class because you can make your own time to do the work for the class.  The only hard part is that if you get stuck/don't know something, it might take a little bit longer since you are at your computer on your own and not in a classroom setting with other students and an instructor right there with you.
